Logistics has become more than simply transporting goods from A to B. Customers have come to expect more, such as insight into the complete process of the shipment at any moment and insight into KPI’s: how do you perform as supplier, and how do your suppliers perform? To measure is to know. Unfortunately, as logistic service provider, you unavoidably and often receive unstructured data from customers and suppliers in various (and sometimes strange) formats. These even come in via various channels, such as e-mail, websites, Word or Excel files or via an FTP server. Of course, Seacon had already integrated data for years, but it had always been a difficult process. The data was received, sent and shared via ‘Copy & Paste’ and was then manually converted into the right format, such as Excel or HTML. This has several downsides.
Integrating in this way is very time-consuming, it does not allow for quick reactions (which is very important in logistics), there is a high chance of errors, it is often a lot of manual work and the data flows cannot be traced.
Seacon then started looking for solutions to this problem and partially contributed to the development of Dovetail. A number of conditions were set at this stage. The software had to be approachable: easy to use, it needed to be stable, to have a thorough error handling, messages had to be traceable and it had to be built modularly (to allow for the implementation of new technology). After the implementation of Dovetail, data flows become comprehensible, as everyone understands what it means; it is low maintenance; and new implementations are quick work. In addition, the software is very stable and fast, allows for good monitoring of flows, has a simple to use error handling module and offers version management.
Dovetail can convert the various message formats to the standards of Seacon. It is now possible to process the data in various ways. The benefits of this are as follows: integration can happen quickly, the organisation can quickly react to the customer demands (which is very important in logistics), there is a reduced chance of errors, data flows are processed automatically, less manual labour remains, and the data can easily be traced.
“By using Dovetail, unstructured data, which also comes in various formats, is processed in our systems in an advanced and comprehensible manner. We can then share this data with other systems and with partners. Thanks to our choice for Dovetail, we save significantly on manual activities.”
